TiDES: Digital Intelligence for Sustainable Fishing

The TiDES project aims to develop a smart digital platform that integrates and optimizes the operational and energy management of fishing vessels. This unified system will improve real-time decision-making by combining variables such as energy consumption, equipment status, navigation routes, and the projected economic value of catches, thereby contributing to cost reduction and increased competitiveness and sustainability in the sector.

From a technological standpoint, TiDES promotes the partial electrification of fishing equipment through multi-drive systems, incorporates energy recovery and battery storage, and applies predictive maintenance models based on machine learning within a centralized platform that integrates the vessel’s subsystems to optimize its overall energy efficiency.

In the environmental sphere, the project focuses on deep-freezing systems using natural refrigerants with low global warming potential and on catch prediction technologies based on computer vision, acoustic sensors, and machine learning, thereby improving biomass estimation and the sustainable management of fishery resources.

The TiDES project is being developed by a consortium of five companies, led by KUARI, together with TH COMPANY, Echebastar, ZUNIBAL, and KARELA SOLUTIONS, and is also supported by the members of the Basque Network for Science, Technology, and Innovation: Tecnalia Research & Innovation, AZTI, NOVATTIA, and the University of the Basque Country. It has also received support from the Hazitek R&D grant program, co-financed by the Basque Government and the European Union through the 2021–2027 ERDF Fund, for the implementation of the TiDES project.
